Do You Know How You Can Prevent Root Canals?

Do you avoid root canal therapy because you’ve heard how painful it is? If so, did you know that root canal therapy is actually about as uncomfortable as having a cavity filled? In fact, root canals are more comfortable than they’ve ever been, which is fortunate because ignoring a damaged root canal can lead to serious problems.

You see, root canal therapy is usually necessary because decay or bacteria damage your tooth’s root canal—the area where the nerves and connective tissue in your teeth are–which can lead to infection. If not treated quickly, the infection could spread and lead to more complications, such as the death of your tooth.

Of course, even though root canal therapy is mostly painless, preventing the problem is still better than treating it. Fortunately, preventing problems with your root canal is fairly simple. In fact, the most important thing you can do is care for your oral hygiene. This means brushing and flossing every day. Brushing and flossing are important because neglecting to do so can lead to holes in your teeth–usually referred to as cavities. Unfortunately, cavities allow bacteria to reach the center of your teeth more easily.
Finally, it is important to schedule an appointment with our dentist once every six months. This is important because your dentist will be able to identify spots that you may not be cleaning as well as you could be. If these spots are left unaddressed, you could still find yourself with a cavity.
