Teaching Kids to Brush and Floss

With the proven link between oral health and overall body health, it’s important as a parent to teach your kids how to create and maintain a regular oral health schedule. Specifically, you need to make sure they understand the importance of brushing and flossing on a regular basis.

It’s recommended by pediatric dentists across the country, including our doctors, to being brushing your child’s teeth as soon as their first tooth appears. In addition, once that first tooth is present, it’s time to schedule a visit with your pediatric dentist. This should happen no later than your child’s first birthday.

A visit to the dentist will help impress upon your kids from a young age how important it is to take care of their teeth. This will establish the oral health habits they’ll carry with them for the rest of their lives.

The time to start teaching your children to floss is as soon as they have two teeth which are touching. It’s important to remind your kids to floss at least once a day, in addition to making sure they brush twice daily. These few simple steps taken when your child is very young will help ensure a lifetime of great oral health.
